A skimmer pulls dissolved organics into a cup before they break down in the water.

TUNZE’s page for the Comline DOC Skimmer 9004 describes flash skimming. Organic-rich surface water mixes with fine air bubbles, and protein, cellulose, and dead cells stick to those bubbles. The foam spills into a cup, and cleaner water returns to the tank.

TUNZE’s same page states that the foamer makes bubbles between 0.1 and 0.3 mm. That figure is from TUNZE, not from a tank trial by us.

Red Sea’s REEFER AC Skimmer page describes a sump unit for saltwater reefs. It is not a filter for a freshwater turtle tub. Turtle keepers should use the gear on our turtle tank picks list instead.

A skimmer does not replace water changes and does not remove nitrate the way a water change does. It exports some organics before they become nitrate.

How to match maker ratings to your tank

Use the maker’s own gallon band, then shrink that band if the tank is an SPS reef.

Makers do not publish one shared load rule, so you must read the row that matches your stock.

TUNZE’s 9004 page recommends the unit from 60 to 250 liters (15 to 65 US gallons), depending on tank load. The same page then gives reduction rules for more sensitive tanks:

  • Leather-coral tanks: use the full listed volume.
  • Mixed leather and LPS tanks: apply a marked reduction.
  • SPS-heavy tanks: apply a marked reduction.

TUNZE’s 9004 is the in-tank pick. Its page lists a 0.2 liter cup and a magnet holder for glass up to 12 mm. Immersion depth is about 225 to 245 mm (8.9 to 9.7 inches). The 4 W draw is the lowest watt figure here, and the 12 inch height is the shortest.

NYOS lists the Quantum 1.0 pump at 8 W and a size of 15 × 21 × 46.5 cm. The page does not print an air-intake number. Each Quantum uses nine titanium grade 2 screws and zirconium dioxide shafts rated at 1600 MPa.

Reef Octopus lists the AQ-1000S pump on the Classic 110-INT. At 60 Hz the pump is 9 W, air intake is 454 LPH, and water flow is 350 LPH. The hybrid-cone body has a 4.7 inch cup and a 2.4 inch neck, and Reef Octopus states that a separate feed pump is not required.

In-tank units need glass thickness and water height. TUNZE lists a 12 mm magnet limit and an 8.9 to 9.7 inch immersion band. If your rim or lid blocks a 12 inch body, this style is out.

In-sump units need footprint, height, and a stable water line. Compare the four sump bodies we listed:

Use the numbers the maker printed, and do not guess a water line.

  1. Confirm the mount. In-tank: check glass thickness. TUNZE’s limit is 12 mm. In-sump: check footprint and height against the cabinet.
  2. Set water height if the maker lists one. Red Sea wants 16–20 cm (6–8 inches) for the AC 300. TUNZE wants 225–245 mm of immersion.
  3. Set water and air if the maker splits those knobs. NYOS says air and water adjust on their own. Reef Octopus points to a precision gate valve.
  4. Leave the cup where you can reach it. TUNZE’s cup is 0.2 liters, so plan to empty it often.
  5. Keep the neck clean. Red Sea lists a built-in manual neck cleaner on its REEFER AC Skimmer page.

Empty the cup before it overflows. Dark, thick waste means the skimmer is collecting organics, while watery overflow means the water level is too high or the neck is dirty.

When a saltwater tank can skip a protein skimmer

Skip the skimmer on freshwater tanks and on some ultra-light nano systems that rely on water changes.

Skip a protein skimmer in these cases:

  • Freshwater community tanks, including betta tanks. Size those tanks with our betta tank guide, not with a skimmer chart.
  • Freshwater turtle tubs. Use a turtle tank setup and the filters on our turtle tank picks page.
  • A bare saltwater quarantine box that you drain and refill often.
  • A nano saltwater tank with light soft-coral stock and large weekly water changes.

Keep a skimmer on an SPS or mixed reef with regular feeding. Keep one on a fish-only-with-live-rock tank that would otherwise need huge water changes. A skimmer is one export path, not a license to overfeed.
