Depth, battery hours, and airflow are the three numbers that decide whether a solar aerator fits.
The USGS Water Science School page on dissolved oxygen states that summer surface water of normal salinity is typically more than 8 mg/L. The same USGS page defines water as hypoxic when oxygen falls below 2 mg/L.
Stagnant ponds lose oxygen in hot, still weather, and USGS notes that summer fish kills often follow that pattern.
A solar pond aerator cannot change those chemistry facts, and it can only move air or water while the kit has power.
- Depth: the maker’s maximum or minimum water depth
- Battery hours: listed night runtime, or none
- Airflow: CFM at a listed psi, or spray gallons per minute
If a maker page skips one of those numbers, treat that gap as a gap and do not fill it in.

Kit names run from Night 1 at up to ¾ acre to Night 4 at up to 2½ acres. Warranty figures are 2 years on the compressor, 5 years on the diffuser, and 15 years on the panels and cabinet.
Outdoor Water Solutions TurboAirXL
Outdoor Water Solutions’ TurboAirXL page lists 6.8 CFM at 5 psi from two 24-volt rocking-piston compressors.
The page lists 1,480 watts from four bifacial solar panels, the highest listed wattage in this set. Kit sizes include XL2 at up to 2 acres, XL3 at up to 3.5 acres, and XL4 at up to 5 acres.
The page says the system runs in daylight only. Warranty figures are 2 years on compressors and electronics, 15 years on panels and airline, and a lifetime rust warranty on the cabinet.

Minimum pond depth is 36 inches on the 2-panel kit and 44 inches on the 4-panel kit. The 4-panel kit lists 300 gallons per minute and a 5-year motor warranty.
Surface spray versus bottom-diffused air
A display fountain aerates at the surface, and a compressor kit pushes air to the bottom.
Scott Aerator’s Solar DA-20 sprays a trumpet pattern. The 2-panel default pattern is 4 feet high and 15 feet wide. The 4-panel default is 5 feet high and 20 feet wide.
That movement hits surface water, and it does not list a bottom diffuser.
Airmax lists ProAir diffusers on both SolarSeries kits. Outdoor Water Solutions lists Optimal Air diffusers on NightAir kits.
USGS notes that bottom water can hold too little oxygen in summer, while surface water can be too warm for fish at the same time.
A bottom-diffused kit is the match when the pond is deep enough for those diffusers. A display kit is the match when you want a visible spray and a listed minimum depth near 3 feet.
Do not treat gallons per minute and CFM as the same unit, because they describe different machines.
How to match a kit to your pond
Match the maker’s acre and depth figures to your pond, and do not scale by guesswork.
Work through this list in order.
- Measure deepest water in feet, then compare it to the maker’s depth figure.
- Measure surface acres, then compare that to the maker’s acre figure.
- Decide if night air is required. If yes, keep only kits with listed battery hours.
- Compare airflow units only within the same type. Use CFM to CFM, or GPM to GPM.
- Check panel count and wattage on the same maker page.
- Confirm what you must supply. Several pages require a concrete pad or pole.
If your pond is deeper than 20 feet, none of the Airmax or NightAir pages in this set list that depth. Stop and ask the maker instead of stretching a 20-foot listing.
Shaded banks cut solar hours. TurboAirXL’s page says the kit is not for shaded sites with limited sun.
What these kits do not cover
Solar aeration cannot replace a grid compressor if the site stays shaded all day.
These pages also do not claim to treat fish disease, and they do not replace a water test.
USGS links low oxygen to rotting organic matter and hot, still weather. Aeration can add air, but it does not remove every cause of a cloudy pond.
Winter is another limit. Scott Aerator’s page says you can leave the DA-20 in the water and cut power until spring.

Airmax lists 20 feet on both SolarSeries pages. Outdoor Water Solutions’ NightAir FAQ lists 20 feet.
Scott Aerator lists a 36-inch minimum on the 2-panel Solar DA-20 and a 44-inch minimum on the 4-panel kit. Those are minimums, not deep-pond ceilings.
TurboAirXL’s page says the compressors can aerate deep ponds. It does not print a foot number on that page.
Do I need battery backup for a farm pond?
You need a listed battery if you want air after sunset without a wall outlet. Night oxygen drops when plants stop making oxygen.
USGS states that dissolved oxygen has a daily cycle, and hot weather lowers the amount of oxygen water can hold.
A daylight-only kit can still mix water while the sun is up, but it cannot cover the night gap unless a battery is listed.
