That sentence is the Waterpuppy Floor-Area Rule. Our research team multiplied each maker’s listed length by its listed width, and we did not invent “standard” inches from memory.
Aqueon’s Critical Dimensions chart lists the 40 Breeder at 36 3/16 by 18 1/4 by 16 15/16 inches. Multiply 36.1875 by 18.25 and the footprint is 660 square inches.
The same Aqueon chart lists the 33 Long at 48 1/4 by 12 3/4 by 13 3/8 inches. Multiply 48.25 by 12.75 and the footprint is 615 square inches.
The breeder has 45 more square inches of floor than Aqueon’s real long SKU. That is about 7 percent more floor, not the 40-to-50-percent gap many blogs repeat.

Aqueon’s chart lists the filled 40 Breeder at 458 pounds and the empty tank at 58 pounds. The difference is 400 pounds of water and décor.
Aqueon notes that filled weights vary with substrate and décor, so plan the stand for the full number. Do not plan around the empty carton weight.
Waterbox’s EDEN 40 FLED page lists 39.5 gallons of display volume and 8 mm glass. The same page lists a 3-year warranty and an integrated glass lid.

A filled 40-gallon breeder needs a purpose-built stand, because Aqueon lists 458 pounds filled.
Do not set that load on a regular dresser or a hollow TV bench. Aqueon’s sizing notes say the stand must meet the tank’s weight and size.
Measure the real footprint before you buy furniture, because Aqueon’s 40 Breeder is 36 3/16 inches long and 18 1/4 inches wide. A stand that is 36 by 12 inches will leave the back glass hanging.
Leave extra inches behind a framed tank for a hang-on filter. Leave space above the rim for a net, a light, and your hands.
