A glass lid is a clear panel that sits on the tank rim, not a light hood and not a mesh screen.
Aqueon’s Hinged Glass Tops page says the cover reduces evaporation and keeps jumping fish inside the tank. The same page says the top works with light fixtures and strip lights.
Marineland’s Rectangular Glass Canopy page lists the same jobs: light in, splash blocked, and jumpers kept in.
Deep Blue Professional’s canopy page adds one claim on its TransLumen line: those panels use low-iron Opti-Pure glass so more light reaches the water.
Most framed-tank lids share one hardware kit:
- A front glass panel you can lift
- A rear vinyl or plastic strip you can cut
- A small handle
Ultum Nature Systems uses a different kit. Its rimless lids use clear clips, not a framed hinge. The maker says those lids still leave room for equipment.

Hinges, handles, and how the lid opens
The hinge is the part that lets you feed without lifting the whole panel.
Aqueon names a hinge with a clear strip you can cut, except on the 12 x 6 inch size.
Aqueon also names a full-length feeding door, so you lift the front strip and leave the rear strip on the filter.
Marineland’s rectangular page tells you to stick on the included handle with double-sided tape, and the vinyl strip stays at the back.
Deep Blue Professional lists a clear hinge and a lid handle on its standard canopy sets. Model ADB32424 is the 24 x 24 inch cube set. The maker says that cube set is not for rimless tanks.

Cutouts: use the rear strip, not a random hole
Factory glass lids do not arrive with drilled filter holes, so you cut the rear strip.
Aqueon calls that strip a clear strip you can cut to fit accessories. Marineland calls it a vinyl strip and says you cut holes where you need them. Deep Blue Professional calls it a cut-to-fit back splash.
Cut in this order:
- Set the glass on the inner lip with the strip at the back.
- Mark the filter body, heater cord, and airline.
- Cut only the strip. Leave the glass edge intact.
- Keep the front panel free so the hinge still lifts.
Do not cut a large hole in the front glass, because that is how jumpers leave.
Leave a small air gap at each cord, because a sealed tank still needs surface ripple from the filter.
If you run a hang-on-back filter, cut one wide notch for the intake. If you run a canister, cut two hose notches.
Ultum Nature Systems says its lids leave room for essential equipment. It does not publish a hole template. Measure the lily pipe and heater before you order that lid.

Those three lids are not copies of each other, so measure the inner lip. Brand rims differ.
Marineland Frameless Cube Glass Canopy NV33018 is the cube path, so do not buy 33300 for an 18 inch cube.
Deep Blue Professional TransLumen Glass Canopy ADB39618 is the low-iron 36 x 18 inch option. Standard model ADB33618 lists a 30 breeder, a 40 breeder, a 50, and a 65.
Ultum Nature Systems Glass Lid with Clear Clips is the rimless path. The maker’s chart lists a 16C cube at 6.29 inches on each side with 5 mm glass.
What a lid changes in the water
A lid cuts evaporation, but it does not replace water changes.
The MSD Veterinary Manual describes old tank syndrome. It can start when keepers add water only to replace what evaporated. That practice is topping off.
Minerals and waste stay in the tank, and alkalinity can fall.
The same manual sets two alkalinity numbers. Total alkalinity at or below 50 mg of calcium carbonate per liter can slow the biofilter. The manual says to buffer so total alkalinity is at least 100 mg per liter.
A tighter lid makes topping off less frequent, but it does not make topping off safe as the only water work.
The MSD Veterinary Manual also times the start of a tank. New tank syndrome often shows in the first 6 weeks. A tropical biofilter can take up to 8 weeks to establish.
Fishless cycling starts with ammonia at 1 to 5 mg per liter, and a lid does not shorten that clock.
