Test KH before you change pH
pH will not stay down if the carbonate buffer is still high.
API’s General and Carbonate Hardness Test Kit page calls KH the carbonate and bicarbonate dissolved in water. That same kit page says carbonate hardness helps stabilize aquarium pH.
The API kit page warns that very low KH can bring rapid pH shifts. It also says water with a high KH level usually has a high pH.
API’s pH DOWN page tells you to measure pH with a test kit before you dose, and to test pH weekly.
Do these four checks before you add any acid.
- Test tank pH.
- Test tank KH.
- Test tap pH and tap KH on a sample that has sat out.
- Write both pairs down, with the time of day.
API’s hardness kit page says weekly GH and KH checks help you catch hidden water problems. Skip KH and you are guessing, which is why many tanks snap back overnight.
Why the pH snaps back after a dose
The water’s mineral buffer, not the bottle, sets whether a pH drop holds.
The US Geological Survey page on pH and water states that pH runs from 0 to 14, with 7 as neutral. The same USGS page says each pH number is a 10-fold change. Water at pH 5 is ten times more acidic than water at pH 6.
That log scale is why a small chase still matters, and you are not nudging a volume knob.
API’s pH DOWN page names the rebound: some water is high in carbonate and bicarbonate ions. Those ions buffer the water, resist a pH change, or cause pH rebound.
EPA’s secondary drinking water standards page lists a pH range of 6.5 to 8.5 for public tap water. That range is a taste and pipe guideline, not a fish law, and many home taps already sit in it.
If your tap is in that EPA band, a lower tank target is a species choice, not a tap defect you must fix tonight.

Use the 0.2-per-day limit
API’s own pH DOWN page sets the speed cap this guide uses.
That API page says some fish may be sensitive to pH adjustments greater than 0.2 in a 24 hour period. It also tells you to take another pH reading before you add another dose.
Treat 0.2 as a hard daily ceiling, not a goal, and a smaller step is fine.
The USGS pH page is why that ceiling is not cosmetic. A one-unit pH move is a 10-fold acidity change, so a 0.2 move is still a real chemical shift.
Follow this daily loop before you add a second dose.
- Morning: test tank pH and KH.
- Dose at most one published amount, mixed into a cup of tank water.
- Wait, then test pH again before any second dose.
- Stop for the day once pH has moved 0.2, or once you hit the target.
- Next day: test again before you touch the bottle.
API’s pH DOWN page also says pH can drift from fish waste, uneaten food, and new tap water. A one-time dump does not lock the number, so recheck KH instead of tripling the dose.
Dilute hard tap water before you add acid
When KH is high, change the source water first and do not fight it with extra acid.
API’s hardness kit page says GH and KH in the tank should match the habitat of the fish and plants you keep. If tap KH sits far above that habitat, dilution is the lever.
EPA’s secondary standards page lists reverse osmosis among treatments that remove dissolved solids. That is why RO water shows up here: it is a mineral cut, not a magic pH drop.
Use a bucket, not the display tank, for the first mix.
- Draw the water-change volume.
- Blend RO water with dechlorinated tap water.
- Test pH and KH of the bucket mix.
- Match that mix to the tank before you pour.
Pouring unmatched tap water undoes yesterday’s work, and the tank then tracks the tap again.
A hang-on-back filter does not lower KH by itself. It only moves water through media, so seat a later peat bag the same way our hang-on-back filter guide shows cartridge layout.
Hobby threads in our filter recommendation roundup often treat a media swap as a pH fix. That is a flow question, not a KH shortcut.
Published acid and buffer doses, compared
These are label amounts from the maker pages, not tank results.
Seachem’s Acid Buffer page says to use 1/4 teaspoon (2 g) for every 80 L (20 US gallons) daily. Keep dosing on that schedule until the desired pH is reached.
That page says this dose lowers alkalinity by about 0.2 meq/L (0.6 dKH). Larger doses may be required in very hard or alkaline water.
Seachem’s Acid Buffer page lists pack sizes of 70 g, 300 g, 600 g, 1.2 kg, and 4 kg. The same page says the product adjusts pH from 5.0 to 8.0 and contains no phosphate.
Seachem’s Acid Buffer page also prints a ratio chart for RO or RO/DI water.
- pH 6.5: 1 part Acid Buffer to 1.3 parts of the paired buffer on that chart.
- pH 7.0: 1 to 2.0.
- pH 7.5: 1 to 2.5.
- pH 8.0: 1 to 4.0.
API’s pH DOWN page says to add 2 drops per US gallon (3.8 L). Its dosing calculator line says to add 1 ml for each 10 gallons. Available sizes on that page are 1.25 fl oz and 4 fl oz.
API’s pH DOWN page also states target bands by fish group.
- Community tropical mix: pH 7.0.
- Goldfish and livebearers: pH 7.5.
- Angelfish and neon tetras: pH 6.5 to 6.8.
- Mollies and swordtails: pH 7.2 to 7.5.

That table is an attribute match, not a ranking. Pick the product whose published steps you will actually follow.
Dose the published amount outside the tank when you can.
- Mix the published amount into a cup of tank water.
- Pour it in a high-flow spot.
- Do not dump concentrate on fish or on the substrate.
If KH will not fall, stop the acid and go back to RO mixing.
Slow paths: peat, wood, plants, and carbon dioxide
Organic acids and dissolved carbon dioxide can lower pH, but they still obey KH.
The USGS pH page states that normal rainfall has a pH of about 5.6. Carbon dioxide gas from the atmosphere makes that rain slightly acidic. The same USGS page says mine-drainage water at pH 2 is 100,000 times more acidic than neutral water.
Those two field numbers show why dissolved CO2 and strong acid are not the same tool. Extra CO2 in a planted tank can pull pH down while the lights are on, then pH rises again when the gas leaves.
Low-tech plants from our beginner planted-tank list can grow without injected CO2, but they do not replace a KH plan.
Peat, driftwood, and leaf litter release weak organic acids and can tint the water, but they rarely beat a high KH reading on their own.
If you try a slow path, keep the same test loop.
- Add one small media bag or one piece of wood.
- Test pH and KH the next day.
- Do not stack peat, leaves, acid, and CO2 in the same week.
- Remove media if pH drops more than 0.2 in 24 hours.
A media bag still needs flow, so seat it where water actually passes, not in a dead corner.
Skip the drop if the tank is already stable
A stable pH that fish already accept beats a perfect number with daily swings.
API’s pH DOWN page calls pH 7.0 ideal for a mixed community tank. That is a published preference, not a command to chase 7.0 from 7.4 this afternoon.
EPA’s secondary pH band of 6.5 to 8.5 covers a lot of US tap water. If your tank sits in that band and fish are eating, a fast drop can cost more than it gains.
Leave the pH alone if any of these cases apply.
- Fish are eating and swimming as they have for weeks.
- pH moves less than 0.2 between weekly tests.
- KH is already low, so one acid dose could crash the tank.
- You cannot test again in the next 24 hours.
API’s hardness kit page says low KH can lead to rapid pH shifts that stress fish. Soft water is not a free pass to add more acid.
If you keep fish that need softer, lower-pH water, change the source mix first. Then move in the 0.2 daily steps instead of starting with the bottle.
