A betta fish tank is 5 US gallons or larger, with a heater, a filter, and a lid. This page compares five kit spec sheets and does not include fish housing, water trials, or kit ranks.
Selection rule: We included only currently sold freshwater glass kits of 5 US gallons or more. The maker page had to list a filter. We left out bowls, vases, kits under 5 gallons, and saltwater-only boxes.

The 20-litre size floor
OATA’s care sheet sets 20 litres as the floor for one male betta.
That equals about 5.3 US gallons, so a labeled 5-gallon box sits just under the line. Fluval’s Spec Aquarium Kit page lists 5 US gallons, or 19 litres.
OATA’s same sheet sets 60 litres for a group of females, about 15.9 US gallons. A 5-gallon kit is a one-male home, not a group tank.
OATA also states bettas grow to about 7 centimeters, so swim length matters as much as volume.

Heater gaps on current kits
Two of the five kits we compared already list a heater on the maker page.
OATA’s care sheet says a heater is required all year. It also sets water at 20–28°C, which is 68–82°F.
In the Waterpuppy Kit Sheet Census, the heater split was:
- Heater listed: Aqueon Rectangle LED Kit (10 gallon) and Tetra Complete LED Aquarium Kit (20 gallon)
- Heater not listed: Fluval Spec Aquarium Kit (5 gallon), Fluval Flex Aquarium Kit (9 gallon), and Aqueon 5.5 LED Aquarium Starter Kit
That is 2 of 5 kits, or 40 percent. Aqueon’s Rectangle LED Kit page says its preset heater holds a constant 78°F. That equals 25.6°C and sits inside OATA’s 20–28°C band.
Tetra’s 20-gallon kit page lists a 100-watt heater. That is the only wattage figure on these five maker pages. The other three kits still need a separate heater, because a warm room is not a heater.
OATA also says keep the tank away from drafts, heat sources, and direct sun. Use a separate thermometer even when a kit lists a heater. Aqueon’s 10-gallon kit lists a thermometer, and Tetra’s 20-gallon kit lists one too.
Why the lid is a hard rule
A cover stops jumps, and OATA still wants a small air gap at the surface.
OATA’s shopping list marks a secure lid as optional but recommended. We treat a lid as required because bettas leave open water. OATA also says leave a small gap under cover glasses, since bettas breathe air with a labyrinth organ.
Maker pages that list a hood or cover:

- Aqueon’s 5.5 LED kit page lists a low-profile full hood with a feeding door.

Fluval’s Flex spec table lists volume, size, and pump output. It does not list a heater, so confirm the lid in the box before you fill it.
Rear cutouts for hang-on filters are the usual gap. Block leftover slots with a cut acrylic strip or a tight foam plug.
Filter flow on these kits
Listed pump rates on small kits can turn the water over many times per hour.
OATA says a filter is always essential and asks for a gentle current so the fish can swim freely.
Fluval’s Spec page lists 55–80 US gallons per hour on a 5-gallon box. That is 11 to 16 turnovers per hour if the pump runs wide open.
Fluval’s Flex page lists 61 US gallons per hour on a 9-gallon box, about 6.8 turnovers per hour.
Aqueon’s pages name QuietFlow filters and do not print a gallons-per-hour number on the two kit pages we used. Tetra’s 20-gallon page names a Whisper PF 20 Power Filter and does not print a flow rate.

How to read the table:
- Pick the Aqueon 10-gallon or Tetra 20-gallon kit if you want a listed heater in the box.
- Pick the Fluval Spec if you want a stated glass cover and published flow numbers.
- Pick the Fluval Flex if you want 9 gallons in a 14-inch cube.
- Plan a separate heater for the Spec, the Flex, and the Aqueon 5.5.
Fluval’s Spec page also lists a 50,000-hour LED life and foam, carbon, and BIOMAX media. That helps low-light plants, but it does not replace a heater.
Aqueon’s 10-gallon page lists five-stage filtration and a cartridge-change LED. Tetra’s 20-gallon page adds a net, AquaSafe sample, and TetraMin sample.
None of these pages replace OATA’s 20-litre floor, heater rule, or weekly 25 percent water change.
A simple setup sequence
Cycle the tank, heat it, and cover it before the fish goes in.
Do this in order:
- Place the tank on a level stand away from sun and drafts, as OATA directs.
- Add sand or gravel and smooth décor. Skip sharp plastic plants.
- Install the filter and a heater. Add a thermometer if the kit omits one.
- Fill with tap water treated with conditioner.
- Fit the hood or cover. Leave a small air gap at the surface, as OATA asks.
- Run the system until ammonia and nitrite read 0 mg per litre.
- Float the bag for 10 minutes. Then add tank water for up to 20 minutes. OATA’s sheet uses those times.
OATA says feed what the fish can eat in a few minutes, once a day, because uneaten food becomes ammonia. For plants, lights, and hardscape, use how to set up a planted betta tank. Fluval’s Spec page lists a 7000 K, 821-lumen LED, which is a starting point for low-light plants, not a plant guarantee.
Do not add a second male, because OATA says two males will fight until one is badly hurt or killed.
Tank mates stay optional
A single male in a heated, covered 5-gallon or larger tank is a complete setup.
OATA says males are often fin-nipped by other fish. It recommends a male alone or with very calm tank mates. Females can live in groups of at least four, and they need about 60 litres, not a 5-gallon kit.
If you add fish later, read best betta fish tank mates first. Stay inside OATA’s 20-litre male floor and 60-litre female-group floor.
Skip snails or shrimp until ammonia and nitrite stay at 0 mg per litre for a full week of tests.

Can a betta live in a bowl?
No, a bowl is not a usable betta fish tank. OATA’s care sheet asks for at least 20 litres for one male, plus a filter and a heater. A bowl fails that volume and almost never lists a heater or a lid.
Is a 5-gallon tank enough for one betta?
It is the usual US kit size, but it is tight against OATA’s 20-litre line. Fluval lists the Spec at 19 litres. A 10-gallon kit clears the floor with more room for a heater.
