Two kits in this set both use the number 400, but they do not move the same amount of water.

Minimum depth and where the float sits
Minimum depth is the first number to check, because a kit that is too tall will suck air or stir mud.
Kasco Marine lists 17.5 inches for the 3400JF and 19 inches for the 4400JF. Scott Aerator lists 32 inches for the 1/2 hp DA-20.
TotalPond and Airmax did not list a minimum depth on the pages we read, so measure the pond before you buy.
Use this short check:
- Measure the shallowest spot where the float will sit.
- Compare that number to the maker’s listed minimum.
- Leave extra depth so the intake does not hit silt.
UF/IFAS says fountains can raise turbidity when they keep sediment in the water. A shallow, muddy pond is a poor match for a tall, hard spray.
UF/IFAS also says fountains are usually not the aeration tool for ponds deeper than about 8 feet, where bubblers work better.
The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff gives a size rule for fishing ponds. It says a typical fishing pond can use 0.5 to 1.0 HP per surface acre.
That rule is for aeration load, not for how pretty the spray looks. A 1/2 hp Scott DA-20 sits in that band for a 1/2-acre to 1-acre fishing pond.
A 400 GPH backyard kit is a display kit for a small pond, not that aeration band.

When a fountain float is the wrong tool
A float kit is the wrong tool when you need deep mixing, not a spray.
UF/IFAS says hypoxia starts when dissolved oxygen falls below 2 to 3 mg/L, and fish and tadpoles cannot live in that water.
A surface spray may not fix the bottom layer. The University of Arkansas at Pine Bluff says fountains add some air, and other aerator types do more when aeration is the main goal.
UF/IFAS says fountains can erode a bare bank. Wave action from a wide spray can chew the edge, so plant a buffer if the spray reaches the shore.
UF/IFAS also says a sudden start in a layered pond can mix low-oxygen bottom water into the top. That mix can drop oxygen across the whole pond.
Start in cool months, or run short periods first. If you need volume without a spray, use a large filter pump.
