We call that number the GPH-Cap Ratio. It is listed GPH divided by listed gallons. It is not a lab result.

Danner Manufacturing’s Pondmaster kit page states these pairs:

In-pond fountain kits versus pressurized UV kits

In-pond kits hide in the water, while pressurized kits sit outside and can feed a waterfall.

An in-pond kit puts the pump and a flat filter in the pond. Danner’s Pondmaster kits add a bell fountain head. The PMK 1700 also lists tubing, fittings, and mechanical, biological, and chemical media.

That style fits ponds the maker caps at 600 to 1,250 gallons. It also fits barrels. It does not replace a pressurized body with a printed UV wattage.

A pressurized kit puts a sealed filter outside the pond. The pump stays in the water and pushes water through foam and a UV lamp. Aquascape lists 14 watts on the 2500 Kit and 28 watts on the 3500 Kit, while Laguna’s Pressure-Flo 3000 lists 24-watt UV-C.

Pressurized kits hide behind plants. They can also lift water to a stream. That lift costs GPH.

Head height cuts the GPH on the box

The GPH on the box is the zero-lift number, and a waterfall is not zero lift.

Aquascape’s AquaForce 2700 page prints a flow chart: 2695 GPH at 0 feet, 2425 GPH at 5 feet, and 1840 GPH at 10 feet.

The same chart lists the AquaForce 5200 at 5284 GPH at 0 feet and 4250 GPH at 10 feet. Maximum head is 14 feet on the 2700 and 24 feet on the 5200.

Use those rows this way:

  • Measure the vertical lift from the pond surface to the waterfall lip
  • Add extra feet if the hose run is long or full of elbows
  • Read the GPH at that height, not the 0-foot number
  • Recheck the GPH-Cap Ratio with the lower GPH

The AquaForce 2700 page also lists 147 watts, a 25-foot cord, and a 14 by 14 by 6.5 inch cage. The 5200 lists 360 watts on the same table. The cage handles solids up to one quarter of an inch.

If the waterfall is the loud part of the plan, keep the pump in its cage. Do not strip the cage to chase a higher GPH number.

Nutrient load is why the filter side matters

GPH moves water, but the filter and UV side must still handle algae and waste.

The U.S. EPA’s 2022 National Lakes Assessment key findings cover lakes, ponds, and reservoirs. They still show why a filter is not optional.

The EPA reports that 50 percent of lakes were in poor condition for phosphorus. It reports 47 percent were in poor condition for nitrogen. Excess nutrients can feed algal blooms and low oxygen.

The same EPA page rates chlorophyll a as poor in 49 percent of lakes. It found hypereutrophic conditions in 30 percent of lakes. Those waters are high in nutrients and algae, and low in clarity.

A pond combo cannot rewrite a national survey. It can still do three jobs the EPA stressor list implies:

  • Trap solids in foam before they rot
  • Give bacteria surface area, such as Laguna’s 3,200 grams of Bio-Lava rock
  • Use a printed UV wattage on green-water cells that pass the lamp

Nighttime oxygen is a separate tool. Add a quiet air pump on a stone when the fountain is off. It does not replace the filter.

A simple install and clean checklist

Place the pump low, hide the canister if you have one, and clean media in pond water.

Install an in-pond kit this way:

  1. Set the Pondmaster-style box on a level spot, not in silt.
  2. Keep the listed fountain head above the water line.
  3. Route the cord over the rim so it cannot siphon water out.
  4. Prime the pump per the maker’s sheet, then watch the first hour for leaks.

Install a pressurized kit this way:

  1. Place the UltraKlean or Pressure-Flo body where you can reach the lid.
  2. Use the listed 1.5-inch pipe on the Aquascape kits.
  3. Keep UV connections dry and shaded.
  4. Bury the canister only if the maker says the body can sit in-ground.

Clean on a short loop:

  • Rinse foams in a bucket of pond water, not chlorinated tap water
