How to tell a guppy is pregnant
A lasting dark gravid spot plus a belly that stays full for days, not hours, is the usable home-tank signal.
The gravid spot sits near the anal fin, at the rear of the belly. It is a dark triangle, and in a pregnant female it stays dark from one day to the next.
A big meal can puff the belly for a few hours. Pregnancy does not fade after one night without food, so check the same fish in the morning before you feed.
Use this checklist:
- The gravid spot is darker than last week, not only after a feeding.
- The belly looks full from the side and from above.
- The shape holds after a missed meal.
- In pale females, tiny dark dots may show through the skin near the spot.
Those dots are developing eyes, and they are a late sign, not an early one.
Do not use color alone, because some strains already have dark pigment there. Compare the same female over several days. A spot that grows and a belly that squares is pregnancy, while a spot that never changes is just her pattern.
Males do not carry fry. Shahjahan and colleagues, in the Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Science, describe the male gonopodium. Females have a less bright body and a swollen abdomen.
A small female can still be gravid. That same paper reports sexual maturity at 8 to 10 weeks, so size is a weak test.
How long a guppy stays pregnant
Published laboratory gestations cluster near four weeks, but the range is wider than most hobby pages print.
Shahjahan and colleagues measured gestation at 25 to 35 days, with an average of 28.1 ± 2.12 days. Their work ran from March 2008 to May 2009 at Dhaka University.
PLOS One’s 2021 paper by Sato, Aihara, and Karino shows why dates slip. They paired females with colorful or drab males in water held at 27 ± 2°C.
Females with colorful males gave birth at 31.1 ± 7.3 days, while females with drab males gave birth at 39.0 ± 9.8 days.
Their shortest gestation was 25 days, and their longest was 58 days. PLOS One also notes that guppies carry one brood at a time, with a typical cycle of about 25 to 30 days.
Plan on about four weeks after a clear gravid spot, and keep watching through week six. Do not treat a late female as a failed pregnancy on day 22.
What a pregnant belly is carrying
Brood size is a range, not a single number, and larger females carry more.
The Journal of the Asiatic Society of Bangladesh, Science paper counted 12 to 60 fry per brood. Twelve dissected gravid females weighed 0.54 to 0.68 g.
Mean egg diameter was 1.02 ± 0.08 mm. Fecundity in that sample was 22 to 52 eggs per female, or 40 to 89 eggs per gram of body weight.
They describe guppies as viviparous multiple breeders, and the tail comes out first at birth. New fry already have jaws, so they can swim and eat from the first hour.
Newborns in that study were 6.5 to 7.5 mm long. Shahjahan and colleagues saw three to five broods after a single mating in several pairs.
After birth the female was ready to conceive again within a few hours. If you do not want more fry, separate sexes after the first brood.
What to do in the last days
Isolate only after the belly squares and the female slows down, not at the first dark spot.
We call this the Last-Days Isolation Rule. Early boxing adds stress and still leaves weeks of waiting. Late cover, or a short stay in a box, protects fry without parking the mother in 1.1 liters for a month.
Watch for these last-days signs:
- The belly looks square or boxy, not softly round.
- The gravid spot is nearly black.
- She hides more and holds in one place.
- She eats less or spits food.
- She flexes or shivers along the body.
When you see two or more of those signs, pick one path:
- Leave her in the main tank if it has dense plants and few adult hunters.
- Add floating plants or a yarn mop so fry can drop out of sight.
- Move her for a short stay in a hang-on box or floating trap.
- Move her into a cycled nursery tank with a sponge filter and cover.
Do not chase her with a net for long, and dim the lights and herd her into a container if you can.
Match the water as you move her, because a sudden chill is a poor start to labor.
Skip medicines unless a clinician who treats fish directs them, because this desk does not diagnose disease.
If she is still eating and swimming, wait. The square belly is the trigger, and the first dark spot is not.

It needs an air pump rated 1 L per minute and uses the tank’s water, so no extra heater or filter is required.
That 1.1 L volume is small for a long stay, so use it for the last days and then move the mother back.
Fluval’s page for the Multi-Chamber Holding & Breeding Box lists up to 3 compartments. It hangs on aquariums up to 1 in thick. That page did not publish a liter count.

Feed in short passes:
- Offer only what she finishes in a few minutes.

After the fry arrive
Move the mother out once births slow, then treat the fry as tiny, free-swimming fish.
Shahjahan and colleagues write that the tail comes out first and that fry are free-swimming at once. In their tanks the fry swam and hunted among stones within 1 to 2 hours.
Adults eat fry, which is why the Last-Days Isolation Rule exists. If you used a box, return the female to the main tank after the burst of births. Do not leave her for days in 1.1 L with a new brood.
If you used plants, leave the fry in the cover and lift the mother if she starts hunting them.
Shahjahan and colleagues saw first broods at 3 to 4 months of age. Separate young males early if you do not want the next generation in the same tub.
A female can conceive again within a few hours of birth. Plan the next month now, and either keep sexes apart or accept another 25 to 35 day wait.
