Shape the hole in this order:
- Mark the outline with a hose or rope so the shape is easy to adjust.
- Strip the sod, set it aside, and dig a beach that rises slowly to dry ground.
- Cut one flat shelf for emergent plants, then dig a central pocket a bit deeper than that shelf.
- Check that the average still lands near 18 inches, and remove sharp stones from the floor and walls.
Keep side slopes gentle so wildlife, pets, and people can climb out, because a vertical wall traps animals and tears liner.
Do not over-excavate “for later,” because extra depth is hard to undo after the liner is in.

- Trim the excess only after the pond is full and the folds have settled.
Do not seam a liner in the field if one sheet will cover the hole. EasyPro’s page says field seams can leak, so order a single piece when the outline allows it.

Use native wetland plants that match your county list. The Service defines a wetland in part by those plants, so skip house tropicals sold only for pots. The Service’s New York Partners page names purple loosestrife removal as a program priority, so do not plant purple loosestrife.
Place plants by zone, not by catalog color:
- On the beach and wet soil, use low emergents that tolerate damp feet.
- On the shallow shelf, use taller emergents that stand in shallow water.
- In the open pocket, use a few floating-leaved plants that shade without sealing the pond, and leave about half the surface as open water.
Do not fertilize the bank, and feed the plants with pond water, not lawn product.
