Quick answer: Start with a 75-gallon tank or larger before you buy a big freshwater fish. Match the adult, not the store juvenile. Skip silver arowanas, pacu, and iridescent sharks for a normal home room.
A 75-gallon tank is the smallest Aqueon size we assign to one adult Oscar.
This page is a desk guide to 15 large freshwater species by tank class. We did not keep these fish in office tanks or run growth trials.
The Oscar-to-Arowana Gate: what made this list
We used two FishBase lengths to decide who gets a home-tank note and who gets a skip.
Our research team compared published specs from FishBase and Aqueon and did not invent adult sizes from shop tags.
We named our selection rule the Oscar-to-Arowana Gate so the cutoff is easy to check.
FishBase lists the Oscar (Astronotus ocellatus) at 45.7 cm max total length. FishBase also lists a common Oscar length of 24.0 cm and a max published weight of 1.6 kg.
FishBase lists the silver arowana (Osteoglossum bicirrhosum) at 90.0 cm max total length and a max published weight of 6.0 kg.
Those two FishBase lengths set the gate for this page.
Here is what got in, and what did not:
- A species had to be a true freshwater fish sold as a juvenile in US shops.
- If published adult size sits at or below the Oscar’s 45.7 cm FishBase mark, it starts in the 75-gallon group.
- If it is larger than an Oscar but still kept in big home tanks, it goes in the 125-gallon group.
- If FishBase lists it at the silver arowana’s 90.0 cm mark, it gets a skip note.
- Giant shop fish in that same class also get a skip note.
- We left out marine fish, pond koi as the main subject, and nano fish.
Aqueon’s setup guide lists heater plans for 75-gallon, 120/125-gallon, and 150–210-gallon tanks. We used those Aqueon tank sizes as the bins and did not build a ranked “best fish” list.
The 75-gallon starter group
These seven species start at the 75-gallon size on Aqueon’s heater guide, not at a 55-gallon box.
Aqueon’s heater guide uses a room of 68–72°F, and for a 75-gallon tank Aqueon lists these heater sizes:
- 200 watt to raise the water 5°F
- 200 watt to raise the water 10°F
- 300 watt to raise the water 15°F
Aqueon also says a filled tank with gravel and decor weighs about 10 lb per gallon. A 75-gallon setup is then about 750 lb on that Aqueon rule, so plan the stand first.
The seven species in this bin are:
- Oscar
- Jack Dempsey
- Green terror
- Texas cichlid
- Severum
- Flowerhorn
- Salvini cichlid
The Oscar is the anchor for the group, and FishBase lists Oscar water as pH 6.0–8.0 and temperature as 22°C–25°C.
Aqueon tells keepers to set a tropical heater at 75–80°F, so use that Aqueon range unless the room is already warm.
FishBase lists Oscar maturity at 12.0 cm, which is why a small shop fish is a trap. The same animal can later hit the FishBase max of 45.7 cm.
Keep one Oscar in a 75-gallon tank if you want a simple plan, and do not add a second large cichlid to that box.
Jack Dempsey, green terror, Texas cichlid, severum, flowerhorn, and Salvini sit in this same Oscar tank class.
Our research team placed them with the Oscar for tank class, not for a shared length. We did not assign each one its own centimeter figure.
Aqueon says territorial fish need floor space, not a tall skinny tank, and a 75-gallon box beats a short narrow tank.
Aqueon lists a 55-gallon heater plan too, but we still do not start these seven fish there. The 55-gallon size is on Aqueon’s chart, not in our starter rule.
The 125-gallon class
These five species need the 120/125-gallon heater plan that Aqueon publishes for larger tanks.
Aqueon says tanks of 100 gallons or larger should use more than one heater. For 120/125-gallon tanks, Aqueon lists two 200-watt heaters at each rise on the chart.
The five species in this bin are:
- Jaguar cichlid
- Clown knifefish
- Giant gourami
- Tinfoil barb
- Bala shark
Jaguar cichlids are bigger-bodied hunters than Oscars and need a long floor and a tight lid, so do not mix them with small fish.
Clown knifefish are night movers that need open midwater and calm tankmates.
Giant gourami are wide, slow fish that outgrow pretty community tanks sold next to them.
Tinfoil barbs and bala sharks are active swimmers that need length more than height. Buy them only as a small group in a 125-gallon tank or larger.
Aqueon’s 150–210-gallon heater plan lists two 300-watt heaters, so use that Aqueon plan if you keep a group of swimmers.
Three species to skip for a home room
If FishBase lists a fish at the silver arowana’s 90.0 cm mark, we say do not buy it.
The skip list is:
- Silver arowana
- Red-bellied pacu
- Iridescent shark
FishBase lists the silver arowana at 90.0 cm and 6.0 kg, about twice the Oscar’s 45.7 cm FishBase max.
Aqueon’s largest heater bin on the same page is 150–210 gallons, and that size is still a home box, not a river.
Pacu and iridescent sharks are sold as small, friendly fish, yet they belong in the same skip class as the arowana.
A common pleco sold as an algae eater is the same kind of trap. We did not add it as a 16th species, and we did not write pond or public-aquarium builds.
Filters and heaters that match large tanks
Match filter capacity and heater watts to the tank, not to the cute juvenile.
Aqueon calls the filter the most important piece of gear and says many keepers oversize the filter on large tanks.

Fluval’s page for the FX6 lists a 5.28 US gal canister and a 15.75 by 15.75 by 20.8 in body, so measure the cabinet first.

Aqueon PRO QuietFlow Size 50 is on the same Aqueon page as a spare hang-on, not a sole filter for these 15 fish.
Aqueon says to set a tropical heater at 75–80°F and to place it near flow. Aqueon says to wait 10 minutes after the filter is running before you plug in the heater.
Care that large fish actually need
Big fish make more waste, so water work and feeding plans matter more than decor.
Aqueon says fish live in the waste they make, so plan hardscape that can take shredding and digging.
Aqueon says to fill a new tank to 1 inch below the rim. Aqueon also says to wait at least 48 hours before adding live plants and fish.

FishBase assessed the Oscar as Least Concern on 4 November 2020. That status does not make a small starter kit a good Oscar home.

What tank size do large freshwater aquarium fish need?
A 75-gallon tank is our floor for one adult Oscar. That floor follows Aqueon’s 75-gallon heater size and the Oscar’s 45.7 cm FishBase max length. Swimmers and jaguar-class fish move up to Aqueon’s 120/125-gallon plan.
Can I keep an Oscar in a 55-gallon tank?
We do not assign Oscars to Aqueon’s 55-gallon heater size. Aqueon still lists 150-watt and 200-watt heaters for 55 gallons. The tank is still short on floor for a fish FishBase lists to 45.7 cm, so buy the 75-gallon size instead.
How big does a silver arowana get?
FishBase lists the silver arowana at 90.0 cm max total length and a max published weight of 6.0 kg. That is why this fish is in our skip group, not in the 75-gallon group.
Do I need a canister filter for large fish?
Aqueon says a filter is the key piece of gear, and large tanks often need an oversized filter or two filters. Fluval lists the FX4 up to 250 US gal and the FX6 up to 400 US gal. Use an Aqueon PRO QuietFlow Size 75 as a second filter, not as the only Oscar filter.
How long can a large fish go without food if I travel?

Why does a big-fish tank grow algae so fast?
Leftover meaty food and strong light grow algae. Aqueon also warns that direct sun on the tank can push heat and algae. Clean the glass, cut the feed, then use the steps in how to get rid of algae in a fish tank.
Can Oscars live in a blackwater tank?
FishBase places Oscars in the Amazon and Orinoco and lists pH 6.0–8.0 for the species. A leaf-tinted tank can sit in that band if you follow our blackwater aquarium setup guide. Do not chase a pH number outside the FishBase range.
